Mr. Timothy E. Gibbs, MPH

Bio

Tim Gibbs, a Delaware native, has worked in the nonprofit sector for most of his career. A graduate of Earlham College with major coursework in biology and psychology, Tim’s Quaker background and values have steered much of his focus on community and social service concerns. He was in the first graduating class from the University of Delaware in nonprofit management, and has subsequently taught portions of that class. Tim was accepted into the Bryn Mawr Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research, however professional commitments kept him from pursuing his MSW at that time.

In the latter part of the 1980’s Tim was called upon with work on Delaware’s first emergency and transitional housing project for people with HIV and AIDS. He directed that initiative until its close and programmatic integration into Catholic Charities.

Subsequently Tim was the Executive Director of Catalyst Project, a Delaware-based nonprofit that focused on the effective and appropriate use of technology in the field of human service delivery. Catalyst Project worked to get nonprofits up to speed with computers, the internet, and provided training and technical support services. Projects Catalyst undertook included the Delaware Helpline Online searchable database, the City of Wilmington’s Family Support Partnership online client maintenance system, DiamondNet – the first network for Delaware area nonprofit agencies when the internet was young, and support materials for the Delaware Department of Labors Virtual Career Network.

Tim was also a member of the Washington, DC, Information Technology Roundtable - and initiative of the Brookings Institute. This group was charged with development of many early privacy standards for the internet, as well as the platform interoperability that has lead to the universal nature of the internet we experience today across desktops, mobile devices, and the like.

In 2001, the Delaware Academy of Medicine contacted Tim through Catalyst Project to assist them with technology needs. Tim consulted with the Academy for three years before being hired as the full-time Director of Information Technologies. Since then he has worked extensively in virtually all functional areas of the Academy, and oversaw the relocation project from Lovering Avenue to the Stanton Campus.

In 2008, after a year of acting as the Interim Executive Director of the Academy, Tim was promoted to permanent Executive Director.

As Executive Director of the Academy, and with significant support and engagement of the Board of Directors, Tim has led the Academy to redefine its mission and programs as the Academy enters into its 83rd year of existence. The process of shifting from traditional library services to a broader public health and professional education focus has taken the better part of five years. A hallmark of this shift has been based on the value of collaboration between a diverse group of partners across many sectors related to health, wellness, and education. These efforts culminated in November of 2013 at the APHA National Conference in Boston, when the Delaware Public Health Association affiliate status was granted to the Delaware Academy of Medicine.

Tim has a Master's in Public Health and is working towards his fellowship with the American College of Healthcare Executives. He has a BA (biology major, psychology minor) from Earlham College, and Nonprofit Management Certification from the University of Delaware. He is also a Microsoft partner, and maintains an active role in the management of technology for the Delaware Academy of Medicine and other area nonprofits in Delaware and the surrounding region. He is also a graduate of the Dale Carnegie Institute.

Tim is on the boards and advisory bodies of numerous Delaware and regional organizations including:

Development Committee, Delaware Community Foundation
Delaware Stroke Initiative
Wilmington Rotary

and serves as the co-chair of the Immunization Coalition of Delaware and the Chair of the DMOST (Delaware Medical Orders for Scope of Treatment) working group.
